Twas the night before Christmas and all through the home
Not a creature was stirring, no vibrating on my cell phone
The stockings were hung, the garlands against the window bevel
The Christmas lights strung brought the electric bill to a new level.
My child is all snug, nestled, and tucked in bed
To give Mommie her quite time, so she doesn’t loose her head
Completing all the last minute gift prep and enjoying a special night cap
While watching technologically enhanced fireside sparkles and jazzy Christmas tunes, my toe steadily in tap
Reminiscing on the past year’s lows, highs and triumphs
Looking forward to what is ahead, reaching for my promises in great defiance
Wishing you the most Merrys of Christmas’ and a grand new year
May blessings chase you down, may everything you touch bloom and blossom, over all you hold dear.
I’ll finish this egg nog with warmth and delight
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Well, I’m home for the day with an ailing toddler. He doesn’t feel well so mommie will see to it that he gets better. While I’m not feeling well myself, what better way to help with process to recovery than some soul food. Literal food for the soul that is Oprah’s Legends Ball. It is one of THE most beloved, sacred, and for its name’s sake, legendary events ever taped in the history of great things. Over three days she honored the most talented and powerful Black women alive on the planet at the time. It aired about 10 years ago and I have watched it many more times than I can remember. I almost know the commentary by heart and I most certainly know every rift, run and word of the Gospel Brunch Concert.
So back to Oprah. The idea that the biggest legend alive on the planet would honor other living legends speaks so highly to Oprah’s character. I love her in indescribable ways. She doesn’t know it but there is no one who I look up to more in my life, no one. Every goal that I have is because of her image and hers alone. I dream because of her. So that is one of the many reasons that this special was and remains such a special event to me.
Being one who doesn’t like to keep good things to myself, I want to share this. And I selfishly want a space to always keep it and access it for myself. I hope you enjoy it for the first time, or for the 100th time. It’s new every time it’s consumed. Videos and beautiful graphics (a fancy way of saying pretty pictures), below.
RIP to the legends who have gone home since this aired. Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Maya Angelou and Ruby Dee. Watching this now, their presence makes this all the more sweet.
THIS. The last day of events was the Gospel Brunch where a microphone was passed around among the anointed and the talented. The ushered in the presence of God that could be felt over miles and years. I can never watch it enough.
Here’s the whole dang thing!! I wish I could hook this up intravenously and have the words and spirit of this event to circulate through me at all times. The beauty in honoring, the encouragement to stand taller, yep it’s all there.
